Important terminology or abbreviations
- Fr - freestyle
- Bk - Backstroke
- Br - Breastroke
- Fly - Butterfly
- IM - Individual medley (fly-bk-br-fr)
- Reverse IM - fr-br-bk-fly
- Desc - Descend (each one gets faster) Ex: 4x100 desc means that each 100m gets faster, the 4th being the fastest
- Build - build within the distance Ex: 4x100 build means that within each 100m you get faster
- AO! - All out! Maximum effort
- Fast! - High effort, but can go again
- EZ - Easy / recovery swimming
- SC - Stroke count - count your strokes and keep it as low as you can
- Golf - stroke count + time (try to keep it low)
- Negative split - the second half of the swim should be faster than the first half
- ↓H2O - underwater (usually dolphin kick)
- Flip turn - the flip used for freestyle or backstroke
- Open turn - the turn used for breastroke or butterfly
- PB or BT - personal best or best time
- Streamline - Underwater body position after diving or pushing off the wall
